What makes a self storage manager great at what they do?
As a manager, your qualities as a business leader and storage expert are what make or break your facility. You’re responsible for your customers, your team, and your facility.
There’s a lot to know and a lot to do.
You’re making decisions across a range of topics from marketing to sales to HR to maintenance. So, how do you do your best work and how do you get better at it?
Storage expert and Asset Manager of Bee Safe Storage, Steven Jeffers, shared his top podcasts and books that helped him learn and grow from Assistant Manager to Facility Manager - in storage, in business, and in leadership.
Like any industry, self storage has plenty to learn. It can be overwhelming and hard to know where to start. But, don’t worry there are tons of resources available.
You can’t expect to become an expert overnight, but if you dedicate time each week to learning more about the industry, you’ll be there in no time.
Since storage trade shows and conferences have had to postpone or cancel their physical events, so many of them are taking their workshops and sessions online.
There are more digital resources than ever for storage managers looking to expand their knowledge and insight into the industry.
You can check out a full list of past and upcoming virtual storage conferences here!
Alongside online workshops, podcasts are a great on-the-go resource for managers looking to expand their storage knowledge.
One of Steven’s favorite is The Atomic Self Storage Show, hosted by three, long time industry veterans and founded to "help independent self storage operators close that gap and restructure their self storage operations to compete in the new economy.”
For a facility manager, learning more and more about the storage industry is a no-brainer though we don’t always think of business development.
But, as any successful facility manager will tell you, it’s crucial to have an understanding of key business concepts like Sales, Marketing, Accounting, and even HR to be able to help your facility continue to grow and improve.
Even more so than storage industry insights, business development resources are readily available. From books and podcasts to classes and webinars, there are so many tools and expert perspectives for whatever topic you’re interested in.
For Steven, growing from Assistant Manager to Asset Manager at Bee Storage meant being diligent about developing his business expertise alongside his self storage knowledge.
One of his go-to business podcasts is The Marketing Book Podcast, named by LinkedIn and Forbes as one of the top marketing and sales podcasts.
Being a strong storage manager also means growing as a businessperson.
In his 2009 book, Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action, Simon Sinek asks, “why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others?”
For Sinek, the effectiveness of an organization isn’t just in the nuts and bolts, but in the leadership - or lack thereof.
Steven would agree, putting this book and many others on his list of influential resources for managers to investigate.
Why? Because managing a facility and a team effectively is bigger than just what you’re doing, it’s also how and why you do what you do.
For managers looking to learn and grow across any or all of these categories, we’d recommend you start with Steven’s Lists of Podcasts and Books.
We hope they help you be the best manager you can be.
