How secure is your self storage facility REALLY?

You have a fence, maybe a gate. There might even be cameras installed at key points in the facility. Is that good enough?

In this Gabfocus Spotlight, Hayden Buettner (Janus International) and Kevin Alvarado (Storable) go over some common places where self storage operators could improve security.

Question: "What are the biggest security blind spots in self storage?"

Check out the video clip below to hear their answers:

In this Gabfocus Session: Security, Gates, and Smart Units, we talked about all things security with experts Kristi Adams (OpenTech Alliance), Hayden Buettner (Janus International), and Kevin Alvarado (Storable). Our panelists talked about key security features to include at your facility, what security means to them, and more!

Don't just rely on access control at that main entry point, right?

Consider layering different levels of visibility, access control, cameras, anything that can help you, just, again, filter out those potential issues before they occur. Prevent folks who shouldn't be in one area of your facility when their unit is in another.

Again, just layering that level of access control throughout your entire facility, and not just on the front end, right? That's going to do wonders just to prevent a bunch of security issues that otherwise would be avoidable."

"I know that contactless entry is hot.

Everyone's trying to go to Mobile, and I think for very good reasons. There's also many different ways to enter facilities. Be like a key card or a Fob, you name it.

But if you're strictly relying on gate codes, please do not allow four-digit gate codes.

If I'm a tenant, how do I enter your facility? And they're like, Oh, we'll give you a four-digit gate c— I'm like, don't do that. You know how easy it would be for a bad apple, as we call them, to come in and just start typing it in 1234, boom.

And they're in.

But the one that I would probably highlight the most, because I hear it all the time, is like, those four-digit gate codes.

That's a blind spot because it seems so simple. Require ten-digit gate codes, use the phone number."
